INNATE IMMUNITY AND ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY – NATURAL DEFENSES

When an external threat arrives, two types of response can be activated:  the innate, non-specific immunity and the adaptive or acquired immunity which, on the other hand, recognizes the possible pathogen and reacts in a targeted way against it. Innate immunity consists of various barrier mechanisms, designed to prevent bacteria and viruses from entering the body or proliferating. This includes skin, sweat, lysozyme (an enzyme present in tears, in nasal secretions and saliva, capable of destroying the cell membrane of bacteria), sebum, mucus, acids of the stomach, certain microorganisms, body temperature. The adaptive immune response is specific to the pathogen presented, it is not present at birth, but is acquired with time. Adaptive  immunity is strengthened as a result of further contacts with the same molecule (antigens) of the pathogen (appearance of memory or recognition of it) and intervenes only when the other lines of defense have not been able to effectively counter the pathogen. It overlaps innate immunity by enhancing the immune response.
