Integrated Medicine

WHAT IS INTEGRATED (INTEGRATIVE) MEDICINE?

Outside of academic medicine, there are various complementary medicines, also called natural (and improperly also “alternative), which use methods different from those of scientific medicine.

Natural therapies have been the subject of various criticisms from the scientific community, which often considers them lacking scientific confirmation and traces their effectiveness, where present, to the placebo effect.

Indeed, there is a substantial difference between alternative, natural and complementary medicine, just as there is a definition for integrated medicine. Unfortunately, over the years these definitions have been confused with each other, giving rise to conflicts between the different Medicines.

To avoid misunderstandings, these differences should be better defined.

Alternative medicine

Unfortunately, the concept of alternative has spread inappropriately, demonizing traditional medicine, without however being able to replace it. The error lies in the very word “alternative” as this would mean that it is opposed to the traditional one. The term instead represents a whole system of practices of various kinds, used against various pathologies, for which there is no proof of efficacy.

Natural Medicine

Form of medicine that uses only natural methods of treatment, therefore harmless and without contraindications.

Complementary Medicine

Unconventional (non-traditional) form of medicine that completes the methods of treating a pathology. This is a very large and constantly developing field. These medicines, also improperly called alternative, that is homeopathy, osteopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, etc. they are methods of treatment that are not based on the principles of traditional medicine.

Integrated Medicine

An innovative approach to medicine and medical education, even if in reality, has very ancient roots. It maintains Traditional Medicine as its fulcrum, without however excluding all the therapies that can assist traditional treatments, focusing on the patient and his being sick. Integrated medicine is therefore above all a systemic medicine, which considers the human being as a whole, and which therefore seeks to treat him as a whole. In fact, our organism continuously integrates thousands and thousands of signals. Every aspect of our life is the masterful result of the coordination and harmony between different systems that communicate and work in synergy. It is a healing-oriented medicine. In fact, doctors are often focused on the disease, while it would be necessary to move to the fact of regaining health, a substantially different goal. For example, a person’s lifestyle is a very important factor. It is important to correct habits that may be unconscious but harmful to the body. It is important to consider both the specific and specific symptoms of each person and the needs and the amount of variables between one person and another is incredible. The patient’s willingness to take responsibility for his or her own health is essential so that the professional can establish a relationship of trust and through this alliance give rise to concrete help. Informing and making sure that the person understands is the cornerstone for any type of intervention. It is only by putting the person in a position to understand that one can help him and even make him autonomous.
